BIOGRAPHY

Johandi du Plessis is an artist and researcher based in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of the Free State in 2014 and is currently reading for her MA in Fine Arts at the same institution, where she also teaches.

Du Plessis is interested in the social life of images and pictures, how and where they move, change, and - instigate change. She works across mediums; drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and digital-based mediums such as GIFs, although she is by no means bound to these mediums since she is constantly open for experimentation.

Du Plessis has taken part in several local and national exhibitions. She was a finalist in the prestigious national art competitions Sasol New Signatures Top 100 in 2021, 2019, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2013 – and the Absa l’Atelier in 2015 and 2014. She has also exhibited in the emerging, local New Breed Art Competition. In 2016 she was selected as one of fourteen of South Africa’s most promising emerging artists to partake in the experimental and interdisciplinary OPENLab Arts Residency held at Modern Art Projects South Africa (MAPSA) in the Karoo in the Northern Cape, South Africa.
