Johandi du Plessis

Johandi du Plessis is an emerging artist-researcher working in the mediums of installation, sculpture, drawing, painting and new media from a conceptual, interdisciplinary and intermedia approach, intermixing art with sociology and design. She completed her BA Fine Arts in 2014 at the University of the Free State, majoring in sculpture and installation and focusing on the notion of art as research and research as art. She is currently busy with her Masters in Fine Arts and her research explores the migration and appropriation of images, and what the clashes between images reveals about South African social imaginaries.

Du Plessis has taken part in nearly thirty exhibitions, which include national arts competitions Sasol New Signatures, Absa l’Atelier, SA Taxi Foundation Art Award and local Phatshoane Henney New Breed. In 2016 she was selected as one of fourteen of South Africa’s most promising emerging artists to partake in the experimental and interdisciplinary OPENLab Arts Residency. She has also taken part in theDistrict Six Fiftieth Commemoration Print Exchange and the Booknesses Group Exhibition.

Her work is included in the Modern Art Projects, and the Department of Arts and Culture collections.
