BIOGRAPHY

Zizicelo Sifumba was born in Sterkspruit Eastern Cape where her love of art was instilled in 1999 at the Sterkspruit Christian School. After completing Grade 12 at Lady Grey Arts Academy, she enrolled at the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein for first year studies in Fine Art. In 2016, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Sifumba's paintings are inspired by the intersections of arts practice and community work. In seeking to find art making that contextualises the issues affecting South Africans. She found there is a need to cross-examine the history of South African art both from the past and in the present. Sifumba believes that the history of South Africa has somehow come to feature in the present tense in the form of the subject matter contemporary artists explore. In her work, she attempts to combine both historical and contemporary narratives to reflect the experience of South Africans influenced by both history and the age of democracy itself. Sifumba's paintings are a continuous attempt to depict the experience of a South African in a metaphoric and non-literal manner.

In 2018, Zizicelo completed her B-Tech studies in Fine Art, majoring in painting. Currently, she is pursuing a Master's Degree in Fine Art whilst continuing to facilitate skills transference and development workshops.
