Neo Theku was born in Botshabelo, a small town in the Free State Province, in 1996. He started practicing as a self-taught artist at a very young age; and then moved to Bloemfontein to start high-school, matriculating from the Academy of Excellence.

Theku went to study at the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein, where he graduated with a Diploma in Design and Studio Art, majoring in Graphic Design. His focus moved from pencil drawing to photography after buying his first camera; and continues to address the subject of mental health among young men. Theku’s photographic artwork titled ‘Suicide Mask’ was the overall winning artwork in the 2019 New Breed Art Competition. The following year, he took part in the group exhibition alongside the other four award-winning artists.

Currently working on his two photographic series titled ‘Skin Black’ and ‘The Lost Bones’; Theku is most likely to use himself as the subject in his photographs.
